As a resident of Yamagata, I finally had the chance to stay at the famous Ryokan Koyo in Kaminoyama Onsen.
I visited with my 7-month-old and 2-year-old in tow.
If you’re planning a family trip to Northern Japan, you might wonder: “Is a traditional high-end ryokan really okay for babies?”

The short answer is YES!
Koyo is exceptionally welcoming for families. Here is my detailed report on their services, amenities, and a few “must-know” tips for parents.
1. Baby Amenities & Kids’ Services
Koyo provides a wealth of items so you can travel light. Here is what was available during our stay:
| Category | Items Provided |
| Bedding & Hygiene | Waterproof sheets, diaper disposal bags, and diaper pails. |
| Bathroom | Potty seats, step stools, baby soap, and kids’ toothbrushes. |
| Clothing & Dining | Yukata (90cm–140cm), kids’ slippers, and tableware. |

Note: They do not provide “baby bath” tubs. However, my 7-month-old enjoyed floating in the regular bath just fine! If your baby isn’t toilet trained, please use a Private Bath or the in-room bath.
2. Private Baths: A Lifesaver for Families
We highly recommend using a Private Bath (Kashikiri-buro) to relax without worrying about the public eye.
- Price: 3,300 JPY for 45 minutes.
- Booking: First-come, first-served at check-in.
Updated Tip: In addition to the bookable private baths, Koyo also offers guest rooms with their own private open-air baths. Having a bath right in your room is the best way to enjoy a soak with your children at your own pace without any stress. These rooms are limited in number and very popular, so be sure to check availability and book early!
3. Dining: Free Rice and Baby-Friendly Seating

The dining staff was incredibly accommodating.
- The “Freebie” Surprise: Even though my toddler was on a “no-meal” plan, they provided free rice and furikake (rice seasoning)!
- Seating: They provide “Mame-isu” (small chairs) and baby rockers, so our 7-month-old could join us at the table comfortably.
- Breakfast Buffet: I found many options for my baby, such as porridge (Okayu), tofu, and pumpkin tempura (I just peeled off the crispy batter for the baby!).

4. Why We Loved Koyo (Personal Highlights)
- Gifts for Kids: My children were thrilled to receive animal origami and coloring sets.
*Note: This information is based on my visit and is subject to change. - Incredible Hospitality: The staff were so kind and proactive, even offering to take our family photos before we even asked.
- The “High-Tech” Toilets: You have to see the first-floor toilets—some even have TVs! The 3rd-floor mirror-walled toilet felt like a fun maze.

- Art & Culture: Walking through the “Rakuyaki Corridor” to see ceramic plates painted by Japanese celebrities is a unique experience.

5. Important Advice for Your Stay

- Choose Futons over Beds: We stayed in a Western-style room with beds, and it was quite a struggle to manage sleep for the toddler and the baby separately. For families with infants, I strongly recommend booking a Japanese-style room with Futons.
- Watch the Low Tables: The standard room tables are low and don’t have corner cushions. If you have a crawling baby, you might want to move the table to the corner of the room for safety.
6. Local “Hidden Gem” Spots Nearby
After checking out, don’t miss these local favorites:
- Mengoria (Children’s Center): Only 5 mins away by car. It’s free and features a great infant area and a huge slide. (Parking is free for 3 hours!)

上山市総合子どもセンターめんごりあ(@mengoria_0512)がシェアした投稿 - Seki Foods: A local supermarket with unique regional snacks. Try the Takoyaki at the shop next door—12 pieces for just 500 JPY! It has a delicious ginger kick.
Summary: A Perfect Choice for Your Baby’s First Ryokan Trip

Overall, our stay at Ryokan Koyo was wonderful. The combination of high-end hospitality and genuine care for children made our trip stress-free. If you are looking for a “baby-safe” luxury experience in Yamagata, Koyo is definitely the place to be.

Enjoy your family trip to Kaminoyama!
